Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

Louis Vierne and Marcel Dupré: two illustrious names that will forever mark 20th-century organ music. Both were connected to Notre-Dame de Paris, but in different ways. Vierne was titular organist there from 1900 to 1937, after having been Widor's substitute at Saint-Sulpice (1892-1900). Dupré, for his part, was Vierne's substitute at Notre-Dame (1916-1920), before succeeding Widor at Saint-Sulpice in 1934. The two musicians were therefore intimately familiar with Aristide Cavaillé-Coll's two legendary instruments, the organs of Saint-Sulpice and Notre-Dame: they knew their colors, character, dynamics, and poetry by heart... Dimensions that would nourish all their music.
The influence was even stronger in Dupré's case: his father was the organist at Saint-Ouen in Rouen, another of Cavaillé-Coll's masterpieces. Marcel paid tribute to him in 1941 in Évocation. The relationship between Vierne and Dupré, initially friendly, eventually deteriorated. But one thing they had in common was that both played until their last breath.
