This is a journey through European Romanticism and Post-Romanticism, exploring the traditions of the French, German, and Russian schools as represented by five geniuses who shared a desire to achieve the most intense emotional expression through new harmonic languages.
In France, Franck and Fauré were among the most original composers of their time, paving the way for the Impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. At the same time, in Prussia, Julius Reubke, rightly praised by his teacher Franz Liszt and who died prematurely at the age of 24, was the pioneer of an aesthetic movement that would inspire Wagner, Bruckner, Strauss, and Mahler. His two great sonatas, one for organ and the other for piano, bear the influence of his mentor Liszt.
Attentive to the works of their Western colleagues, but also to those of their illustrious elders Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev brought this romantic adventure to a close with two of the greatest pieces ever written for the piano, which they loved to perform themselves in their recitals.
