The Creation, Haydn
Tuesday, June 30, 2026, 8:30 PM
Estimated Run Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris
Having enjoyed the richness of Handel's oratorios in England, Joseph Haydn set to music the creation of the world as described in Genesis in the Bible: thus Die Schöpfung was born, a mature work that remains one of his most famous scores today. Divided into three parts, the oratorio first describes the creation of the earth itself, then the appearance of animals, and finally the love of Adam and Eve. Alternating between recitatives, arias, and choruses, the music is richly descriptive, carried by the composer's orchestral genius and imagination: we hear birds singing, waves crashing... It reflects the heritage of the Baroque era, mixed with the burgeoning classical style. Celebrating a harmonious universe, Die Schöpfung was a huge success when it premiered in Vienna in 1798.
Solidly supported by the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and under the inspired direction of Thomas Hengelbrock, the Maîtrise Notre-Dame de Paris and its young soloists will perform the work with accuracy and sensitivity.
