Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The solists of the Maitrise de Notre-Dame invite us on a European journey through the sacred music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Spirituality is expressed in many ways, carried by the eloquence of the voice. In the Italy of Monteverdi, Cima, Cavalli, and Grandi, music marries text in a new way to reveal its dramatic intensity: an expressive breath that would inspire all of Europe for centuries to come. In France, Campra and Charpentier integrated this heritage into their sense of refinement; in England, Purcell developed a new poetry in setting words to music; in Germany, Buxtehude and later Telemann synthesized Italian influences and Germanic rigor. From one language to another and from one style to another, music magnifies the sacred word.
